Fall Vocabulary #1

adumbrate- to produce a faint image or resemblance of; to outline or sketch.
The author adumbrates in the book to give hints of what is coming next.
apotheosis- the elevation or exaltation of a person to the rank of a god. (perfect example)
Kaitlyn saw pizza as the apotheosis of foods. 
ascetic- a person who dedicates his or her life to a pursuit of contemplative ideals and practices extreme self-denial or self-mortification for religious reasons.
A monk is an ascetic.
bauble- a showy, usually cheap, ornament; trinket; gewgaw.
The Johnson's Christmas tree was covered in baubles they brought home from many vacations around the country.
beguile- to take away from by cheating or deceiving.
By saying he got an A on his test when he really got a C, Ryan beguiled his parents so he can play Xbox. 
burgeon- to begin to grow, as a bud; put forth buds, shoots.
The little seed burgeoned into a large tree. 
complement- something that completes or makes perfect.
Grace's outfit complemented her figure. 
contumacious- stubbornly perverse or rebellious; willfully and obstinately disobedient.
Rock bands are known for breaking rules and being contumacious. 
curmudgeon- a bad-tempered, difficult, cantankerous person.
My cousin is a curmudgeon child in her terrible twos. 
didactic- teaching or intending to teach a moral lesson.
A good teacher can be didactic and personable. 
disingenuous- lacking in frankness, candor, or sincerity; falsely (not genuine)
Even over text message, Susan recognized Aaron's compliment was disingenuous. 
exculpate- to clear from a charge of guilt or fault; free from blame; vindicate.
Whitney had to go to traffic school to exculpate her speeding ticket. 
faux pas- a slip or blunder in etiquette, manners, or conduct; an embarrassing social blunder or indiscretion
Bryce's faux pas at the dinner made him look bad but made everyone more comfortable. 
fulminate- to explode with a loud noise; detonate
Special agents are trained to fulminate bombs.
fustian- a loud noise; bombastic
hauteur- haughty manner or spirit; arrogance.
Even the pastor's hauteur might not be handicap.
inhibit- to restrain, hinder, arrest, or check.
The NYPD pulled over a red Ferrari and inhibited the driver for using the vehicle while intoxicated. 
jeremiad- a prolonged lamentation or mournful complaint.
The jeremiad will always have it's place in a group of friends. 
opportunist- a person who practices opportunism, or the policy of adapting actions, decisions, etc., to effectiveness regardless of the sacrifice of ethical principles
John is an opportunist and will say yes to any offer proposed to him.
unconscionable- not guided by conscience; unscrupulous.
A lot of teens make unconscionable decisions from peer pressure.
